The Officer's Struggle
Ok, no lengthy post...just a quote I discovered online from General Booth that sums up the struggle we all face as Officers.
Booth admitted:
I have been trying all my life to stretch out my arms so as to reach with one hand the poor and at the same time keep the other in touch with the rich. But my arms are not long enough. I find that when I am in touch with the poor I lose my hold upon the rich, and when I reach up to the rich I let go of the poor. (http://www.thewarcollege.com/bti_info.html)

I believe Booth struggled with what we all struggle with- the flesh. I hate social events . . . but recently I attended a leadership event at Milliken (a major textile company in our area) and mingled with the “other side.” “Suites” driving BMW’s, Porsche’s Mercedes’, etc . . . who doesn’t dream of that kind of life at one time or another?
But I must say, I get frustrated with dealing with beggars as well. Of course, I do think there is a difference between being poor and begging . . .
Blessings,
Bret
Wouldn't it have been really cool if William had said, "Reach 'over' to the rich" instead of 'up?'
I'm just being petty. Seriously, I think William was struggling with the ability to understand that we are all rich and all poor in some area. Apparently, he was only speaking monetarily.
I think he had a wonderful heart and a sensitive ear when it came to doing what God was blessing in his time.
I also believe that William Booth had an incredible ability to use critical thinking on his own ministry, while others would not have blamed him for being satisfied, whether he was still effective or not.
