JESUS: MASCOT OR LORD?

I am in the beginning of the book Generous Orthodoxy and am finding it hard to put down. Thank you to those who have recommended this reading...eye and heart opening. With each page it hold you accountable to the idea "do we really reflect the basic tenants of our faith as Christians, or are we just spouting off (even unintentionally) catchy pharases". The one concept that jumped off the page at me was the idea that we as Christians could be in danger of placing Jesus as our mascot more than our Lord. Now we can quickly say, NO....but really think about it. Do we unswervingly profess our loyalty, come in surrendor to His will and plans for our lives....or do we use him as a gimmick to bring others into the church? Do we put so much emphasis on the Son that we forget there are 2 other persons in the Godhead, the Father and the Holy Spirit? Do we use His name too frivolously that its like talking about Sue or Joe from down the street instead of our Lord and Savior, the very Word of God? What do you think?
For instance, I keep having running in my mind the chorus from music camp about bananas....peel bananas, throw bananas, go bananas, squash bananas, and you end yelling Bananas for Jesus!!! Um, don't quite get it!

Wow, I'm going to have to read that book!! If we really take a hard look at it, I think in a lot of instances Jesus has become our mascot. That really saddens me. Thanks for the post to get me really thinking about it.
